Plagiarism & How to Avoid It

Learn what plagiarism is and how to avoid committing it in your writing.

Tips for Avoiding Plagiarism

Plan ahead
Conducting research and making the best use of what you find takes time. Often students unintentionally plagiarize because they don't have enough time to synthesize research and put it into their own words.

Stay organized
As you search for articles, books, and other resources, keep track of the materials you plan to use by creating bookmarks, saving copies, or printing them out. Citation management software like Zotero can help you stay on top of your research

Take good notes
Keep a list of all the sources you gather, including relevant chapters, page numbers, or URLs. A synthesis matrix can be a helpful note-taking and organizational tool when you're writing a literature review, since it asks you to summarize and organize your research as you go.

Use your resources
Hood College offers lots of resources to help you succeed. If you have a question about integrating sources into your paper, visit the library, ask your professor, or schedule a tutoring session at the Student Success Center
