Zotero

Learn how to use free Zotero research management software.

Start Using Zotero

When you first start using Zotero, you may want to set up a few preferences and choose citation styles to make your research management organized and convenient.

Preferences

If you click Edit > Settings, you can choose some settings to make Zotero work best for you.  Here are a few quick and helpful settings:

  • Under Cite > Style Manager, you can see what styles are currently installed, and there is a link to download additional citation styles if you need them.
  • Under Export, you can see a helpful feature of Zotero called Quick Copy, which allows you to copy citations to the clipboard (which you can then paste into Word or anywhere else) in the citation style you prefer.  This is where you can set the preferred citation style, under Item Format. Zotero settings export menu page.
  • Settings for Sorting: Zotero allows you to sort by a number of categories so that you can easily find an item by its title, published date, author, or the date you added something to your library.  To sort by title, for example, click the "Title" bar at the top.  To add more options for sorting, right click on the title bar and select additional categories.Zotero desktop application sorting options.
