Frederick Community Action Agency (FCAA) Food Bank Program provides a 3-5 day supply of food to individuals/families that are experiencing an economic crisis and cannot afford their groceries.

Montgomery County Resources

Residents of Montgomery County can receive free food. There are a number of places that run these programs, including local churches, a food pantry or bank, as well as soup kitchens. Listed below are locations and phone numbers of a variety of centers and non-profit agencies in the community to obtain meals, groceries, and emergency food from.

 

Many of the centers do have restrictions or limited hours. For example, individuals may receive free food once a month or so. Some of the Montgomery County centers may also provide such items as diapers (Pampers) and baby formula, which may occasionally be available. Other pantries may serve holiday meals or offer personal hygiene supplies. When a low income family has been approved for groceries, both perishable and non-perishable food will sometimes be offered. Note that some food pantries may require a referral from a charity or government agency before each visit.

Additional Montgomery County food programs can be available to people that dial 410-737-8282. Whether a senior citizen needs information on Commodity Supplemental Food Program or Meals on Wheels, or a working poor family needs a free box of food, assistance is arranged.

The not-for-profit Catholic Charities can administer a number of social service programs for the low income, unemployed, and other struggling families. Among the resources offered is a free food pantry and thrift store. They also offer basic household supplies, soap, and serve Christmas meals.

This is one of the leading social service agencies. They have an onsite food pantry, offer meals, thrift store, and other aid. Case managers will help families apply for SNAP food stamps, they offer support to seniors and single moms, and help feed the working poor.

The following organizations located in Washington County, MD help individuals and families seeking assistance with supplemental food and various other services. Please read each entry carefully as some organizations only serve individuals/families from particular geographical areas of the county rather than individuals/families from the entire county.

Please also note that in Washington County, many if not the majority of food pantries require you to register with the Washington County Community Action Council (WCCAC or just CAC), their information will be listed directly below. Once you recieve a Food Bank Card from the WCCAC you may visit the one of the participating food pantries (including the WCCAC's food pantry) once a month for supplies.

In Hagerstown: 

Washington County Community Action Council (WCCAC)

The Washington County Community Action Council Inc. (WCCAC) is an entity that provides supplemental food aid to individuals and families of Washington County in Maryland. The WCCAC also provides help in the form of: 

  • Crisis Assistance
  • Energy Programs
  • Housing Assistance
  • Housing Counseling
  • Property Assistance Programs
  • Transportation

The WCCAC is part of the Washington County Food Bank Card Program, a group of organizations which work together to provide food items to those individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. The WCCAC is the sole issuer of the the Food Bank Card needed to access this program, so you must apply with them first before accessing their pantry and any of the other pantries that are part of the program. (Note: Most pantries that are in the program will allow you to get items once without the Food Bank Card but will require you to have the card for any grocery requests after that.)

Here is what you need to do to access these food pantries (including the WCCAC's):

  1. Create an appointment with a Crisis Case Manager by calling 301-797-4161 or by emailing drose@wccac.org,

or by heading to the address listed below.

  1. Make sure to ask what documents you will need to bring (Photo I.D, Proof of Residency etc.) to the appointment.
  2. Appointments are First-Come First-Served as well as Same-Day.

Once you receive a Food Bank Card you may use it once a month at the WCCAC or any of the Participating Organizations below. Some organizations may allow more than one visit a month, make sure to ask each organization about how often groceries may be requested.

The Hagerstown Rescue Mission contains the Hope Center Rescue Mission which operates a Food Pantry as well as prepared meal programs.

Carroll County Food Sunday

Carroll County Food Sunday is an organization which offers a Food Pantry for residents of Washington County.

  • Carroll County Food Sunday WILL NOT operate if Carroll County Public Schools are closed.

The Rock of Help Food Pantry is a Pantry operated by the Ebenezer United Methodist Church for residents of Carroll County.

The following organizations located in Howard County, MD help individuals and families seeking assistance with supplemental food and various other services. Please read each entry carefully as some organizations only serve individuals/families from particular geographical areas of the county rather than individuals/families from the entire county.

Columbia Community Cares

Columbia Community Cares is an organization providing "grab-and-go" packages of food as well as essential items such as diapers in Howard County.

The Howard County Food Bank provides supplemental food assistance to residents of Howard County.

A pantry serving the residents of Carroll and Howard Counties, also hosts a pet food pantry.

Open Door Food Pantry

The Open Door Food Pantry is a Food Pantry operated by Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
