Student Publishing

This guide provides guidelines for publishing doctoral dissertations, masters' theses, and other Hood scholarship in academic and open access repositories.

Traditional vs. Open Access publishing through ProQuest ETD

One of your choices when submitting to Proquest ETD will be to decide if you want to select Open Access or Traditional Publishing.  Hood recommends the Traditional Publishing option in order to retain the greatest level of control over your work. Because of the library's participation in MD-SOAR, your work will already be published in an open-access repository without you having to pay anything. See the differences below:

Traditional Publishing through ProQuest ETD

  • The thesis will not be freely available in PQDT Open
  • There is no fee charged.
  • The author is eligible to receive royalties.
  • The thesis will be available for purchase through ProQuest.
  • The thesis will appear in ProQuest Dissertations & Theses, a subscription database.
  • A record for the thesis (may include citation, abstract, preview, etc.) will appear in Udini and other ProQuest resources, in library catalogs and in indexes

Open Access through ProQuest ETD

  • The dissertation will be freely available in PQDT Open.
  • There is a fee of $95.00.
  • The author waives rights to receive royalties.
  • The thesis will appear in ProQuest Dissertations & Theses, a subscription database, and in PQDT Open.
  • A record of the thesis (may include citation, abstract, preview, etc.) will appear in Udini and other ProQuest resources, in library catalogs and in indexes.
